Tuya gateways explained, from Zigbee hubs to local control

What is a Tuya gateway?
Tuya does not sell plugs or bulbs under its own name. It supplies the radio modules, the Tuya Smart and Smart Life apps and the cloud that hundreds of other brands build into their products. Tuya was founded in 2014 and says more than 410,000 products have been developed on its platform, so a smart plug from almost any white-label brand is likely a Tuya device inside.
A Tuya gateway, also sold as a Tuya hub or bridge, is the box that connects the devices that cannot reach your router on their own. It forms the Zigbee network, pairs Bluetooth devices, and passes their state to the app. Most retail gateways plug into the router with a network cable; others join over Wi-Fi.
If a device called "Tuya" shows up on your home network, it is usually one of these white-label plugs, bulbs or sensors, or the gateway that serves them.
Are Tuya and Zigbee the same thing?
No. Tuya is a platform company. Zigbee is a low-power mesh radio standard that some Tuya devices use, next to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE and NB-IoT.
Which Tuya devices need a gateway
Wi-Fi devices such as plugs and bulbs join your router directly and talk to the Tuya cloud. They need no hub to work with the app; a gateway only matters when you want to control them locally.
Zigbee devices such as battery sensors and wall switches cannot join Wi-Fi. They need a gateway with a Zigbee radio, which runs the mesh and bridges it to your network. A Tuya Zigbee device uses the standard Zigbee radio, so other Zigbee hubs can often pair it, but the way it reports its readings can be Tuya-specific, and the hub has to know the device.
Bluetooth LE devices talk to a phone nearby. For control from outside the house, or for automations, they need a hub with a Bluetooth radio.
NB-IoT devices connect over the cellular network and need no gateway.
What kinds of Tuya gateway are there?
Retail Tuya hubs are named after the radios inside them. Pick the one that matches the devices you already own or plan to buy.
Zigbee gateway
The most common Tuya hub. It runs the Zigbee mesh for sensors, switches and valves, and usually connects to the router by cable. Many are sold as Zigbee 3.0 gateways.
Bluetooth gateway
Bridges Bluetooth LE and Bluetooth mesh devices, such as locks and lights, to the network so they can be reached from outside the house and used in automations.
Multi-mode gateway
Zigbee and Bluetooth in one box, often with Wi-Fi. One hub covers a mixed house, and the Tuya app sees every device in one list.
Matter gateway
Bridges Tuya Zigbee devices into Matter, so Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa can control them next to Matter devices from other brands.
How do I set up a Tuya gateway?
A retail hub takes a few minutes and no technical knowledge. The steps are the same for most brands.
1. Connect and power it
Plug the gateway into your router with the supplied network cable, or join it to Wi-Fi if it is a wireless model, then power it on.
2. Add it in the app
Open the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app, add the gateway and follow the steps. This creates the link to your Tuya account.
3. Pair the devices
Put each Zigbee or Bluetooth device in pairing mode and add it under the gateway. Most hubs can pair several sub-devices in one search instead of one at a time.
4. Group and automate
Assign devices to rooms so voice assistants know which lamp you mean, then add timers, scenes and rules, for example lights on when your phone comes within a set distance of home.
Can Tuya devices run locally, without the cloud?
Out of the box, no: every command from the app goes to Tuya's servers and back. With a hub that speaks to the devices on your own network, yes.
Why local control matters
Commands do not leave your network, so switches respond faster and keep working during an internet outage. Fewer of your device's events pass through a third-party cloud.
Home Assistant and "Tuya local"
Home Assistant can control Tuya devices through Tuya's cloud or locally. A local gateway hands each device to Home Assistant over MQTT or HTTP, so Home Assistant does not need to reach Tuya at all to switch a plug.
What still needs the cloud
First-time pairing usually goes through a Tuya account. On our own gateway we have not tested pairing without one, so we tell clients to plan for an account during setup.
How do Matter and privacy affect a Tuya setup?
Matter changes which apps can control Tuya devices. Privacy depends mostly on whether commands go through the cloud.
Tuya and Matter
The first Matter specification was published on October 4, 2022, covering lighting, door locks and security sensors among other categories. Tuya began adding Matter to its platform the same year. Tuya's partner MOMAX reported getting its Matter devices certified within thirteen business days using Tuya's services.
For a buyer, the practical effect is a Matter gateway: it bridges existing Tuya Zigbee devices into Matter, so they show up in Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa next to devices from other brands.
Is Tuya safe to use?
Tuya states that it complies with GDPR and CCPA, keeps an in-house security team, and supports industry programs such as ioXt. Questions about how the platform handles user data still come up, because a cloud-controlled device reports its events to Tuya's servers.
The Connectivity Standards Alliance, which runs Matter, now offers an IoT Device Security Specification 1.0 and a Product Security Verified Mark for devices that pass it. Look for that mark, keep firmware updated, and use local control when you want device events to stay on your network.

Common questions
What is a Tuya device on my network?
Usually a white-label smart plug, bulb, camera or sensor built on a Tuya module, or the gateway that serves them. Tuya supplies the radio, the app and the cloud to many brands, so the device may carry a different name on the box.
Is Tuya a Chinese company?
Yes. Tuya Inc. was founded in 2014 and is based in Hangzhou, China. It does not sell devices under its own brand; it supplies modules, apps and cloud services to other manufacturers.
Can Tuya work without internet?
Not with the stock app, which sends every command through the Tuya cloud. A gateway that controls the devices on your local network, such as our ESP32 Tuya gateway, keeps switches and automations working when the internet is down.
Does Tuya integrate with Home Assistant?
Yes, in two ways: through Tuya's cloud, or locally through a gateway or integration that talks to the devices on your network. Our gateway connects to Home Assistant and also exposes MQTT and HTTP for other systems.
What is a Zigbee gateway?
A box with a Zigbee radio that forms the mesh network, pairs Zigbee sensors and switches, and bridges them to your Wi-Fi or Ethernet network. Zigbee devices cannot join Wi-Fi themselves, so without a gateway they are unreachable.
Is Tuya Zigbee the same as standard Zigbee?
The radio is standard Zigbee, so a Tuya Zigbee device can often pair with another Zigbee hub. Some Tuya devices report their readings in a Tuya-specific format, so the hub has to recognise the device model for every value to come through.
Do Tuya Wi-Fi devices need a hub?
No. Wi-Fi plugs and bulbs join your router and the Tuya cloud directly. A hub only helps when you want to control them locally instead of through the cloud.
Can I use an ESP32 as a Zigbee gateway or router?
Chips with an IEEE 802.15.4 radio, such as the ESP32-C6 and ESP32-H2, can run Zigbee. The original ESP32 has only Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so a gateway built on it pairs the ESP32 with a separate Zigbee radio. Our gateway combines an ESP32 module with Zigbee and Bluetooth LE radios.
How many devices can a Tuya gateway handle?
It depends on the model, so check the maker's specification. Our ESP32 gateway controls more than 50 Tuya devices across Wi-Fi, Zigbee and Bluetooth LE.
Does Zigbee have a future now that Matter exists?
Yes, for battery sensors and switches it is still a common radio. A Matter gateway bridges Zigbee devices into Matter, so you keep the devices you own and control them from Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa.
