What to put in the first message

You do not need a spec or a schematic. Answers to these five questions let us come to the call with a rough plan instead of a blank page.

Already have a design another firm started? Send the files. We review them before we quote, so the quote covers the design you have.

  1. What must the device do?Measure, see, switch or report what, and how often.
  2. Where will it live?Indoors or outside, mains or battery, how far from Wi-Fi or a cell tower.
  3. How many, and by when?Ten prototypes for a pilot and 5,000 units a year are different projects.
  4. What exists already?A sketch, a dev-kit proof of concept, an old board, firmware, an enclosure.
  5. What is fixed?A launch date, a target unit cost, a certification you need (FCC, IC, CE).

Common questions

How fast does Maxlab reply?

Within 24 hours. The form, email and phone all reach the same engineering team, so there is no sales desk in between. If the project needs a call, the reply includes a link to book one.

Can we sign an NDA before we share details?

Yes. Send your own NDA, or ask for ours in the form or by email and we will send it before the intro call. Nothing confidential needs to go in the first message.

Do I need a spec before I contact you?

No. Most of our clients arrive with a problem rather than a spec. Tell us what the device has to do, where it will be used, roughly how many you need and by when. We turn that into requirements in the first stage.

What happens on the intro call?

It takes 30 minutes. We ask a lot of questions about the device, the setting and the volumes, then tell you whether we are a fit. If we are, a scoped quote for the first stage follows.

Do you work with companies in the US?

Yes. Our clients are in the US and Canada, and we work with them remotely. The team has engineers and contractors in several countries; the office is in Edmonton, Alberta.

Can you take over a design another firm started?

Yes. Send the schematics, layout and firmware you have. We review them before quoting, so the quote reflects the state of the design rather than a guess.

How is a project priced, and who owns the design?

Each stage is quoted as fixed scope or billed hourly, your choice. At the end you own the design files: schematics, PCB layout and firmware source. The services page lists the stages.

I have a question about Tokay Lite. Where do I ask?
